Goddess Meenakshi Tanjore Painting
Goddess Meenakshi Tanjore Painting

The lovely Devi Meenakshi Tanjore Painting is captured in the sumptuous Tanjore medium. For the devotees of Madurai’s guardian deity, such a painting would be a valuable addition to the home or office space. It depicts the Parvati-Roopa Devi standing with a soft-bellied lotus beneath her feet. Garlands of fresh flowers of varied colors are around her neck and her shoulders, and over the archway of her temple entrance.

The pastel-colored soft-textured floral elements balance the luxuriant metallic embellishments in this composition. The Goddess saree is made up of solid gold layers upon gesso-work. The same is true for the plinth beneath her lotus-poised feet, the temple pillars on either side of the standing figure, and the Kirtimuham archway above - again - the gold-embellished crown.

A complexion of soothing green color. Eyes brimming with life and expression. The artisan’s skill has brought the iconography to life in every square inch of the canvas. Framed by dark-colored wood, which is the norm with traditional Tanjore paintings.

Paata Painting of Lord Ganesha Stretching Serpent Making Canopy
Paata Painting of Lord Ganesha

A visual fusion of the twin aspects of Ganesha as dancer and warrior. The son of Shiva inherits not just the tandava of Nataraja, but also His all-annihilating aspect. In the Pattachitra Paintings that you see on this page, the elephant-deity is possessed of eight arms (He is dashabhujadhari), wielding weapons, and other Shaivite implements. The legs and torso, however, are in the dramatic tribhanga stance, indicative of dynamism or nrtya. His gorgeous wives, in miniature proportions, are on either side of the plinth beneath His feet: Riddhi bears a chamara and Siddhi an ornate fan.

The most striking aspect of this Ganesha Paata Painting is the snake stretched high over His head. In His posteriormost hands, He cradles the neck and the tail of the snake, which bares its fangs into nothingness. Painted on rough-hewn tussar silk, this composition features solid colors and vibrant tones. This is a hallmark of the folk paintings of Orissa called pattachitra, images (‘Chitra) executed with specially prepared pigments on Patta (canvas). Both the pigments and the patta are made by hand by the artists.

Rama-Seeta With Hanuman In Durbar- Watercolor On Board
Rama-Sita With Hanuman In Durbar- Watercolor
A resplendent Rama-durbar Watercolor Painting on Board (embossed with 24 karat gold), to add to the auspiciousness of your home. The Hindustani word ‘durbar’ translates to court, and indeed what a glamorous court of Lord Rama. This is The Lord and His wife, the sacredly beautiful Devi Seeta, are seated on a throne at the center of the composition. It is upholstered in red velvet and gilt with gold to convey the cosmic glamour of the Vishnu and Lakshmi avatars (incarnations; Rama-Seeta is considered the ihalokiya incarnations of Vishnu-Lakshmi).
The brothers of Rama surround the divine couple. The throne is flanked by Bharata and Shatrughna, sons of Queen Sumitra and Queen Kaikeyi, while Lakshmana, son of Queen Sumitra, kneels on the floor before them (these are the co-wives of Queen Kaushalya, mother of Rama). On the other side of the throne prostrates the great Lord Hanuman, celebrated for His unconditional love and devotion for Rama. While Hanuman makes an offering of a lotus to the Lord and Lakshmana joins His hands in the namaskaram mudra, Bharata and Shtraughna look lovingly over their brother and sister-in-law.
The dense adornment of the figures and the crowns on each of their heads have been executed in skillful gilding. These thin gold leaf embellishments are a characteristic of classical South Indian art. More of this, that also in luxuriant proportions, is to be found along all four edges of the work, especially the upper edge made to resemble the architecture of a temple entrance.

Kalamkari Painting-Radha Dances to the Lord Krishna’s Flute
Kalamkari Painting-Radha Dances to the Lord Krishna’s Flute

Radha is an inseparable part of Lord Krishna. In this section, portraits of their togetherness abound, each one depicting a hitherto unexpressed aspect. The one you see on this page is a fine example of folk art from the South - it is a work of kalamkari, the theme of which as per tradition is a spiritual one. Inspired by the love of Radha and Krishna, the artisan has infused this work with a life and dynamism are possible only for the truly devoted.

The charming Lord Krishna is making divine music on His flute. A richly colored halo frames His towering crown, and large kundalas flank the roseate countenance of the Lord. Kalamkari Painting-Radha dances with abandon to the Krishna Flute music emanating through the forests - the pitcher of water she was carrying has dropped to the ground and this romantic moment in his Company is one of the happiest of her day.

The word ‘kalamkari’ literally translates to penmanship, but the catch is that the ‘pen’ in question is a rudimentary one made by the artisan from natural supplies by hand. This explains the atypical lines and the limited color palette that define the subject. A voluptuous silhouette characterises both figures. Note how the intricately done, high-precision lines make up for the lack of color variation in this work.

Goddess Lakshmi-Watercolor Painting
Goddess Lakshmi-Watercolor Painting

Lakshmi is the Vedic deity of the Hindu Religion that presides over resources. Goddess Lakshmi is the wife of Vishnu, who is responsible for the preservation aspect of the existential cycle. She is aptly depicted in this watercolor in all Her heavenly glory. The resplendent silks of Her saree are set off by the matching rubies and emeralds on Her ornaments. Streams of pearls cascade down Her torso, touching the elaborate Kamar band that wraps around Her gracious hips. Her gold neckpiece goes well with the chunky, studded gold on Her four wrists, but even more so with the gorgeous crown on Her head. In Her left anterior hand, she holds a richly adorned pot with a lid to protect the wealth within. She is the very picture of plenty.

Every time Her husband has been incarnated as Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, and Krishna, she has accompanied Him as Kamala, Dharani, Sita, and Rukmini. Hence, she has come to embody the especially feminine virtues of beauty and devotion. She is as inseparable from Him as knowledge from intellect, coherence from words, and dharma from righteousness. A divine sense of calm is writ across Her supremely beautiful brow, the rest of Her form as rubescent as the lotuses She holds up in Her tender (posterior) hands. The right anterior hand is the ashirvaad mudra, which with Her chosen devotees amongst the most fortunate of our realm of existence. Her four arms stand for dharma (ethics), artha (wealth), kama (pleasure), and moksha (deliverance).

While the Puranas describe the birth of Goddess Lakshmi as the daughter of the sage Bhrigu and his wife Khyati, she is deified as having been born from the oceans during the all-important Samudra Manthan. Artist Kailash Raj depicts Her as such, emerging from the tempestuous waters. Complex brushstrokes in limited shades and tints of blue illustrate with great skill the prevailing turmoil in the heavens. Note the graduated halo that surrounds Lakshmi - the gold glow of knowledge, followed by the pink ringlet of beauty, and finally the pristine layer symbolic of ethical purity.

Powerful Kamandalu- Oil Paintings
Powerful Kamandalu- Oil Paintings

They say a sadhu (ascetic) lives by three tenets. He comes and he goes, but does not stay; he sees and he listens, but does not say; he eats and he drinks, but does not taste. Indeed, he goes through life with a threshold degree of detachment, upon which his sadhana (spiritual practice) is based. Amongst his minimal possessions are the staff, to help him navigate harsher terrains, and the kamandalu, wherein he gathers whatever bhiksha (edible alms) he may chance to receive.

The lustrous brass kamandalu that you see in this painting sums up the Indian yogic idea of asceticism. It is big enough to hold a scarcely sufficient meal’s worth of food at a time. From the tanned and lined hand from which it dangles, the sadhu to whose service it belongs seems to be a veteran yogi of the lower reaches of the Himalayas. The distinctive saffron of his robes contrasts sharply with the green grass reflected on the body of the kamandalu, an unusual subject for an oil painting.

It is in the kamandalu that he accepts all his bhiksha, irrespective of the state or the taste palette of the offering in question. Everything - textures and tastes - blends therein, a reinstatement of the third of the basic tenets of asceticism. The kamandalu is practically his lifeline, the only remaining link between him and life as we know it. Any day now, he would no longer need even the humble kamandalu.

In this The Blues of Love Painting, he has created a bewitching and meaningful scene that is depicted through an aesthetic lady whose face is blurred with a tinge of blue to reveal only her casted down eyes, a lovely nose and pursed lips that are complimented by her charcoal black Bob styled hair that sways with the advancing wind. Her thin long hands are painted in a shade of blue, sadly contrasted by half a dozen different colored roses that range from baby pink to white to olive green as she loosely holds them in her left hand, metaphorically defining her current state of mind.

The lady wears a Turkish blue halter neck dress that blows away in the wind however she is depicted not to care. Her background is hued in a lovely blend of blue, grey and back tints, further carving in to show a closed door that enhances her backdrop. The amazing brush strokes define the fabulous artistry as the painter doesn't miss even a single detail as he swiftly etches this illustration in the brilliant canvas.
