Oil Painting of Baby Krishna on Canvas
Oil Painting of Baby Krishna on Canvas

The story of young Krishna was first told more than 2000 years ago. Originally recited by bards from memory, it was later composed in the Sanskrit poem, the Harivamsa. The sun-like baby Krishna, Vishnu come to earth, was the delight of Vraja.

Born of this earth, reared in the soil of Vraja, yielding to the temptations of this world, indulgent, inimitable, lovable in his pranks, ever guilty, yet redeemed, he was extremely fond of butter and butter milk. The cowherdess would churn butter at the crack of dawn, keep it safe before going out to tend to cattle or settle down to domestic chores. For Krishna, no amount of safekeeping would work; he would lay his hands on butter, by hook or by crook most of the times by the latter.

Baby Krishna Painting looks irresistibly appealing a blue complexion soft like the monsoon cloud, shining locks of black hair framing the most adorable face, knotted up to curtail those curls, tied and a peacock feather tucked in. With large lotus like eyes, he looks innocent while licking the butter off his fingers. His mother Yashoda has lovingly adorned her baby with a lot of jewellery.

If heavy drapes fall on the left, on the right hangs a chorded basket holding the urn in which the butter was purportedly kept safely. Krishna seems to have pulled down one urn and in his greed to consume as much as possible, he has spilled some on the floor as well. On the other side of baby Krishna Paintings lies his inseparable flute.

A divinely adorable painting to touch not only Vaishnavite hearts but pull at all heart strings.

The Labyrinth - Oil Painting On Canvas
The Labyrinth - Oil Painting On Canvas

N. Harichandan of Orissa is one of the artists who are capable of encapsulating abstract art most beautifully. Abstract art is the use of shapes, colors, forms, and gestural marks to achieve the effect of visual reality. In this painting, the artist has encapsulated a Labyrinth Painting, mostly referred to as a maze which is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. In the modern world, it is a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one's way.

In this piece of art, the artist has hued the canvas with mustard, grey, and green colors that are spectacularly emblazoned on the canvas, bewitching the onlookers with its amazing beauty and charm. The walls of the maze are perfectly etched with cuts and lines to give them a realistic effect. The difficult passages are contrasted by the roofs of the thick walls. However, the artist has made an open-ended painting as he has not illustrated any particular destination of this maze.

With its fineness and the expert brush strokes, the artist has taken this artistic wonder to the next level raising curiosity and admiration in all the art lovers making it their top-notch ornamental choice.

Ganesha Canvas Oil Painting
Ganesha Canvas Oil Painting

Perfect shades of vibrant colors and the sharp beauty of Lord Ganesha Painting, who stands in his nritya (dance) posture on a high pedestal decorated with lotus petals at the top and two multi-wick diyas of devotion on either side, majorly enhance picturesque aspects of this oil painting.

The oval aureole bordered with full-grown multicolored flowers enhances the auspiciousness of this elephant god; garbed in heavenly colors of yellow dhoti, royal blue stole hung on his hands with the contrasting pink kamarband that falls in perfect pleats with the zaried antique borders; embellished in ancient yet modernly designed real jewels and the richly carved royal crown that glorifies on his head. Chaturbhuja Ganesha is seen dancing on the cosmic beats arousing from his blue and gold carved dholak and the dandiya sticks that bang to produce rich soulful and curing sounds.

The expression of his sparkling lotus eyes, beautiful trunk, and that distinctive Shaivite tilak on his forehead portray his realistic gestures as if in motion. The painter has very skilfully and mindfully used the light and dark color combinations filled with naturalistic brush strokes, accentuating various emotions of love, devotion, culture, and beauty in one frame.

Simhavahini Devi Durga Oil Painting
Simhavahini Devi Durga Oil Painting

The simhavahini Devi Durga is a sight to behold. She is a powerful feminine presence, born to annihilate adharma at the very root. She fulfills a purpose that is beyond the scope of the entire Hindu deva pantheon, Mahishasuravadha, or the slaying (‘vadha’) of the buffalo-demon (Mahishasura). She is as strong as she is beautiful, as invincible as she is fair, as omnipotent as she is nariroopa (womanly manifestation).

The Durga oil painting that you see on this page depicts the beauteous Devi in a vivid red saree and a gold crown, with her gorgeous black mane cascading down her back. The jewels that encircle her halo of pale gold match the ones studded densely onto her crown. Around Her neck is a garland of fresh flowers, a devotional offering. She is ashtabhujadharini, the one possessed of (‘dharini’) eight (‘ashta’) arms (‘bhuja’). In each of those hands is a weapon or a divine implement.

The word simhavahini is a portmanteau of ‘simha’ (lion) and ‘vahini’ (rider). Nothing less than a lion suffices her purpose, as sturdy and determined as she is. Note the brushstrokes that have gone into the main and the revealed musculature of the creature, proof of the painter’s skill as well as shraddha. An aura of blue surrounds Devi Durga’s haloed head, which contrasts with the textured purple ink background of the composition.

Eldest Bahuraani With Hookah- Oil Painting
Eldest Bahuraani With Hookah- Oil Painting

She lacks neither beauty nor wealth. A powerful woman, not quite past her prime, sits with her legs crossed on a seat of red velvet and brocade cushions. She directs her gaze straight ahead of her, with all the confidence of the eldest bahuraani (daughter-in-law) in the absence of her mother-in-law. She is probably blessed with the love of more than one son in addition to her husband’s. In this oil painting, she is depicted in her leisure, smoking on a hookah upon a quiet afternoon at home.

In keeping with her social status, she is dressed in a lehenga of green and ivory silk with an ample proportion of brocade on it. Her shringar is flawless - maangtika and headband, nosering and jhumke (chunky Indian danglers), necklaces and amulets and anklets, and a world of rings on her fingers and toes. From the fashionable cut of her choli to the jewels studded on her gold ornaments, she is a woman of domestic clout.

Zoom in on that unusual face, the flattering lines having emerged from the fulness of youth and maternity. Her eyes are large, of deep brown color. An intelligent brow set against a seductive mouth. The hookah in her hand is a symbol of her power and place within the socio-domestic realm, and it is in that bhoga that such a gorgeous woman whiles away her days.

This brilliant painting, Oil Painting on Canvas, as large as four by six feet, rendered in modern art style but with a mythical theme, represents the ten-armed Devi – Goddess, killing the buffalo-demon Mahisha, better known as Mahishasura. The goddess is attended on her right by goddess Lakshmi carrying lotus in her right hand, and a pot of gems, in her left, and on her left, by goddess Saraswati carrying in her right hand a lotus bud, and in her left, her usual ‘vina’ – stringed musical instrument. Though while the gold complexioned Lakshmi is attired in pinkish mauve ‘sari’ and blue complexioned Saraswati, in light green, in their overall adornment – style of crowns, garlands of fresh flowers and other ornaments, the two figures are almost identical.  Two other figures are attending upon the goddess; on extreme right in the lower register is the four-armed Ganesha carrying disc, mace and conch, the attributes of Vishnu, and the elephant goad; on the extreme left is a princely figure with bow and arrow, perhaps Karttikeya rendered in simple human form instead of his six-faced form.
Though a votive icon enshrining a large colourfully structured arch, almost all forms static, the image of the Great Goddess charging at the demon with her trident superbly portrays motion and force with which she overpowers the demon. Unlike a routine representation in any medium – stone, metal, textile, paper or canvas, this painting represents the demon’s anthropomorphic as well as animal forms independent of each other. Most other Hindu Paintings perceive the demon Mahisha, a term meaning buffalo, as half man-half buffalo, often the human form emerging out of the decapitated figure of the animal. In the painting the demon’s buffalo part has been represented as its head. Though with its eye wide open, it lies motionless on the ground. A bit of the animal’s back and tail are other parts visible in the paining. The Devi’s mount lion seems to walk over it. The demon, in his anthropomorphic form, appears to have been completely baffled and dismayed by the Devi’s sudden attack and has meekly submitted. The weapon he held in the right hand has slipped away, and with the shield held in his left, he has fallen on the ground.
Mahishasura-Mardini- Oil Painting on Canvas
Mahishasura-Mardini- Oil Painting on Canvas
The Mahishasura-Mardini form of the Devi, now popularly known as Durga, that blends sublime force and commitment to a divine cause with the beauty of a feminine form conjoint with exceptional agility and brilliance, prevails over her all forms, votive or aesthetic, in Devi’s iconography. In this painting the goddess has been represented as carrying in her ten hands battle-axe, spear, wheel, arrow, chopper, mace, club, bow, bell and a large snake stretching down to the demon’s figure and holding him in its coil. Notably, out of the Devi’s ten arms just two, one charging with spear and the other releasing the snake are engaged in killing Mahisha, as if not more than just a grain of her power was required to annihilate him. Alike, the Goddess is engaged in battle with the most mighty demon of the day but her face is not turned to him, or is rather turned into direction other than his, suggesting that the evil’s eradication is just her side-target, the world’s weal, to which her face is turned, being her primary.
Now a popular myth, a buffalo-faced demon by the name of Mahisha once ruled the earth. By his great penance he had won from Brahma the boon of invincibility against all males. This turned him into a highly ambitious and arrogant ruler. After grabbing the entire earth he invaded heaven and defeated Indra and all gods and evicted them of Indraloka – their abode. Gods approached Brahma for rescuing them and learnt from him about Mahisha’s immunity from death at the hands of all males, gods, human or beasts. On Brahma’s revelation that a female alone could kill him, after due deliberations gods decided to create a female power out of their divine attributes as also bestowing on her absolute divine beauty and female graces, such as made her represent also the absolute womanhood on the earth. Thus, the Great Goddess, out of gods’ power and with their attributes was created. Finally, sage Narada disclosed to the newly created Goddess the sad plight of gods and the errand for which she had been created. The Goddess delightfully accepted the prayer of gods and later in a fierce war killed the buffalo demon Mahisha. Anup Gomay, a contemporary artist with rare talent for portraying myths realistically marking the continuity of the great tradition of the modern art style which reached its zenith in the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, has painted this excellent art piece.
This description by Prof. P.C. Jain and Dr. Daljeet, Prof. Jain specializes on the aesthetics of literature and is the author of numerous books on Indian art and culture. Visualisation Imagery- Oil Painting
Visualisation Imagery- Oil Painting

Of all the different layers of concentration expounded in the yogasootras, it is the seeded kind that is aided by visualisation imagery Oil Painting. By seeded, Maharshi Patanjali meant the state of the mind that still contains the singular remnant of a dying impression (sanskara). The abstract oil painting that you see on this page is a visualisation aid designed to propel the mind of the yogi towards seeded samadhi.

It is a fine mix of solid pastel tones blending into a vortex at the Bindu (dot) in the center. It is an absorbing scarlet color, surrounded by white and gold and earthier greens, blues, and browns. The brushstrokes that make up the multitude of colors in the vortex are extended upwards into panels of aquamarine blue and the color of fire. This is the most striking aspect of the composition.

The section beneath the vortex is dominated by shades of crimson. Upon the bosom of the red earth, one could see a pair of limbs gathered in a fine padmasana. Situated thereon is a semblance of the female genital, a symbol of shakti, an aspect of the feminine. The same is surrounded by the body of a blooming lotus. With intricate brushwork, the petals of the lotus are blent into the curves of the vortex at the center of the composition.

Lord Ganesha’s Unstructured Halo - Oil Paintings
Lord Ganesha’s Unstructured Halo - Oil Paintings

Lord Ganesha is a Baal-deva, a child (Baal) of the divine order of the devas. He is an integral part of Shiva-Parivar and the Devi Durga offspring retinue in devotional art; and when portrayed alone, He is the scribe of the Mahabharata and/or the very picture of traditional opulence. The oil painting you see on this page is a singular depiction of the Lord. Quiet, gathered, solitary - such is His all-encompassing gaze that the mere onlooker turns into a devotee within minutes of meeting it.

Like a child, He is seated in a rudimentary bhadrasana. His right hand is raised in blessing, the left holding up a seriously large laddoo (His favorite, and the most auspicious of Indian sweetmeats), which the tip of His trunk gently grazes. A distinctive janeu could be seen across His chubby child’s torso, while a powerful trishoola tilaka graces His temple, each betraying His superlative lineage.

The warm, dynamic tones of the background project an otherworldly aura, especially against the smooth, pristine skin of the Lord, which is as if sculpted from marble. The hem of His dhoti has been painted such as to blend into the dark background, which evens out into a twilight glow upwards along with the composition. The light seems to be emanating from the Lord’s head, making for an unstructured halo, a distinctive feature of modern devotional art.

Shivabhakta Lights The Lamp Of Worship- Oil Painting
Shivabhakta Lights The Lamp Of Worship- Oil Painting

A young lady of distinctly noble bearing has stepped into the Shiva mandir to pay her respects. She has duteously risen, dressed up, and arrived at the temple of her Lord at the crack of dawn. Within the bonds of her silence and sadhana, her Roopa takes on an ethereal glow. She has lit the gold ghee lamp before Him. With her fair hands, she lifts the tiny basket of freshly plucked flowers that she has brought for Him, her bangles tinkling against each as she does so.

She is wearing a solid white lehenga with thick gold-bordered choli and a dupatta. The low neckline of the gold-sleeved choli reveals her soft, youthful décolletage, so she has layered studded gold necklaces over it. Long, dangling jhumke and a statement maangtika complete her shringar. The most beauteous aspects of her tastefully made-up face - green eye-shadow, fawn-colored lipstick - are those large eyes and the full cheeks.

She is in a spacious poojana-kaksha, which is probably the family altar of her new sasuraala. Where the artist has captured her is her favorite corner because therein resides her Lord Shiva in the larger-than-life murti in the background. Several minor deities grace His aureole, and Devi Parvati is seated in lalitasana nearby (to the right of the background). The rock-cut sculptures are as gorgeous as the lady who has lit the lamp before them.

The Princess Confides In Her Lady In Waiting
The Princess Confides In Her Lady In Waiting

In this The Princess Confides In Her Lady-In-Waiting Painting- A private moment between two young sahelis (female friends). As they while away their time with a dhol in their private chambers, the princess opens up the recesses of her heart to her favorite lady-in-waiting. She is telling her about a young man, a handsome warrior of the neighboring kingdom, whom she had occasion to exchange a glance with. Her heart is in a fledgling state of enamor, and she cannot quite contain herself.

The princess is dressed in an ivory silk dhoti and breast band, woven in with gold booties studded with rubies and emeralds. Her ample hair is coiled in a tall pile on the top of her head and held in place by several pure gold pins and ornaments. On the other hand, her humble lady-in-waiting is dressed according to her station - simple white choli with a solid pink lehenga, and unassuming gold ornaments on her relatively duskier skin. The thick plait of her long hair grazes her thigh.

The lady-in-waiting looks deep into the eyes of her mistress, trying to understand the full import of the goings-on over her heart. The princess looks into the distance, trying her best to capture every detail from that tumultuous memory. Note how her delicate hand is raised mid-air as if caught in some minor detail of the exchange.

Lady with Her Messenger Bird - Canvas Oil Paintings
Lady with Her Messenger Bird - Canvas Oil Paintings

Anup Gomay is known for his artistic ability to provide picturesque backgrounds to his amazing paintings. In this painting, he encapsulates a baby blue sky decorated with cotton-like clouds and contrasted it with a lush green setting, capturing rich American sycamores that give it an eye-catching look. The painting is bordered by a red brick pillared balustrade that is imprinted with ethnic patterns and turns out to be the seating area of a beautiful Indian damsel who is complexioned in lovely golden sand color with her countenance being etched with almond-shaped cat eyes and guarding soft angled eyebrows that compliment her watermelon pink full lips and her pierced Greek nose which is ornamented with a gorgeous nose pin.

The Lady with Her Messenger Bird is apparelled in an azure blue crop top choli which is imprinted with copper floral designs and bordered with intricate banarasi designs that reveal her perfect waist extending over to a matching lehenga with the ditto designs and bordering gotas. Her hands are embellished with jade-colored bangles that are enclosed in thick gold bangles going along with her delicate stone embossed rings and chandelier Kundan earrings that extend to reveal a triple-layered string that loosely drapes behind her head. Her neck is adorned with a pearl necklace and a bar of stunning gold plated choker necklace that matches her amulet-like morganite studded armlet. The lass's lovely charcoal black hair is enhanced with a perfect gem-studded headband and a gold plated maang tikka that beautifies her red bindiya.

The gorgeous damsel takes hold of the scarlet red Bhagavad-Gita in her right hand as she attends a blue and yellow-tinted macaw with her left hand as it opens its wings in a welcoming pose. The amazing lady and her messenger bewitch the spectators in the lovely charm of this fantabulous painting making it one of the best pieces ever witnessed in the history of art, thus, the top choice of all buyers in town.

Lord Shiva - In The Company Of Nandi
Lord Shiva - In The Company Of Nandi

The solitary Lord Shiva is seated atop the peak of Kailash, his cosmic home next to the Mansarovar. The existential destroyer has his trusty Nandi for company, the mythic bull with the power of a thousand of its mortal counterparts. He rests one hand on its head between the horns, while in the other he holds an ivory conch that he regards with half-shut eyes.

In the Lord Shiva Oil Paintings-Company of Nandi the beauteous eyes of Lord Shiva are steeped in contemplation over the conch. In the midst of his albatross brow is a semblance of the third eye smeared with vermillion. Circular gold kundalas set off the pronounced jawline of the handsome Mahadeva. Luxuriant auburn hair spread about his shoulders, from the crevices of which a serpent raises its hood against the glamour of his halo.

The serpents coiled around his wrists and arms and waist go well with the ruggedness of the backdrop. A range of snow-clad mountains and hints of verdure. The Lord is resting on a sheet of ice, over which he has spread out his mat fashioned from the skin of a tiger he had overpowered. Note how his legs are gathered in a seeming bhadrasana, despite the relaxed stance of the rest of him.

The Bridal Shringara- Oil Painting On Canvas
The Bridal Shringara- Oil Painting On Canvas

The brown, sparkling eyes keep a steady gaze over the mirror, stupified by their beauty, filled with kohl and green eyeliner that enhances their beauty. The red-colored lips have twitched into a smile and the long, elegantly straight nose sets over the smooth, wheaty-complexioned face of the woman. Her neck is adorned with two dim faux-colored diamond necklaces and white pearl Mala that drapes over her cleavage.

Her chest-length, green blouse with golden Banarasi laces tightens over her, exposing her deep and round navel with her light purple dupatta with golden embroidery resting on her mirror holding hand along with her baggy, green trousers that hang over her waist. With her other hand, she holds a comb entangled in her long, navel-length, bluish-black hair that covers her breast from the eyes of the envious kaneezes in the background. A small, red, round teeka sets between her eyebrows complimenting her jewel-studded, long jhumkas.

The seated beauty signifies the amazing phenomenon of love. It is widely obvious that she is lost in the thought of her lover and is doing shringara for him only and recalling her memories for him and has a mystic yet gorgeous glow over her face, picturing this aura with masterstrokes. This master painting of The Bridal Shringara- Oil Painting is shared by Anup Gomay.

Ardhanarishvara At The Himalayas Oil Paintings On Canvas
Ardhanarishvara Oil Paintings On Canvas

According to Sankhyadarshana (a system of Indian philosophy), it takes Purusha, the energy principle, and prakrti, the matter principle, to form life. What we perceive around us (drshyam) is but a confluence of these two. The former is represented by the masculine, while the latter is represented by the feminine. They are visualised as Lord Shiva and Devi Shakti, respectively. The painting that you see on this page is a union of the two, a composite Shivashakti figure, called Ardhanarishvara Oil Painting, which translates to the half-woman deity.

Lord Shiva and the Devi Shakti is easily distinguishable. A loincloth is wrapped around His hips and clutches of rudraksha are His adornment. She is in a saree of auspicious vermillion color and wears gold jewelry, as befits her status as His wife and complement. He has a jatamukuta, upon which rests a sliver of the silver moon; upon her brow is a crown studded luxuriantly with the finest jewels in paraloka. He wields a trishool (trident) and she cradles a flushed lotus. Standing next to Him is the devoted bull Nandi, while her trusty simhavahana is to be found on her side.

A softly glowing halo graces Ardhanarishvara's head. The riverine Devi Ganga emerges in her pristine, fluid beauty, straight into the lap of the glacial Himalayas in the background. Their sharp peaks and rugged bodies stand in sharp contrast to the soft blue streams that flow at their feet.

The Buddha- Oil And Acrylic Painting
The Buddha- Oil And Acrylic Painting

A row of lotus buds grows from the murky waters of a pond in the woods. A layer of emerald-colored lotus pads coats its surface, from amidst which rise the slender stems with the pink crowns. Of varying lengths and blooms, they sway this way and that, conveying life and dynamism in a seemingly still work of art. The princely face of the Buddha predominates in the background. His mukhamandala is the softest, most beauteous lotus of them all.

But for the jewel tones of the lotuses and lotus-pads in the foreground, this painting is largely monotone. A smooth silvery complexion, a composure of bliss and wisdom and equanimity. He is the Enlightened One, having attained Buddhahood after years after years of wandering and mendicancy and asceticism. Those long, wisened ears and the profound contemplation of that brow are the results of lifetimes of intangible sadhana. The painter has captured exactly that out of the sheer skill of his brush and the shraddha in his heart.

Smoke-colored clouds fill the background in this Glowing Face of Buddha Painting-Oil Painting. The whole of it is coated with a layer of shimmering gold mist, proof of the gently rising sun outside the frame of this painting. Its rays emerge into the frame and light up the left side of Gautama Buddha’s face. This infuses the composition with warmth and light and life.

Goddess Lakshmi-OIl Painting On Canvas
Goddess Lakshmi-Oil Painting On Canvas

Devi Lakshmi is a Hindu Goddess seated in the lap of a lotus. Its vibrant pink petals gather Her in their folds, setting off the roseate beauty of Her complexion. Clad in a saree of red and gold brocade, teamed with a turquoise blouse woven in with gold and jewels, she looks every bit the presiding deity over wealth and resources. Wife of Lord Vishnu, queen of Trilok (the three realms of existence), She is indispensable to the process of preservation, over which presides Her husband.

The chaturbhujadharini (possessed of four arms) Devi Lakshmi-Oil Painting On Canvas wields traditional implements in each of Her hands. A minuscule lotus bloom, of the same peachy pink color, in Her posterior right hand. In Her posterior left, a kalasha of solid gold studded with rubies and emeralds, on the mouth of which is the traditional poojana-specific arrangement of leaves of bael and a ripe coconut. The anterior left-hand metes out blessings to the truly hardworking and devoted. Finally, from the folds of Her anterior right palm emerges a steady stream of gold coins.

There is no denying the beauty and power of Devi Lakshmi. Thick black mane that frames a slender torso. An ebullient face set off by the glamour of Her bejeweled crown and karnakundalas (danglers) and a nose ring. On a slow, steady stream of deep blue waters, the haloed Devi floats, passing by the dense tropical forests of the background.

Oil Paintings - Bharatanatyam Dancer
Oil Paintings - Bharatanatyam Dancer

A warm, brilliantly hued saree. Expressively lined eyes. Captivating mudras accompanying the sonorous sound of ghungroos. The magic of Bharatnatyam is not only in the dancer but in her attire and her skill and her expressiveness. It is hands-down the crown jewel of the eight classical dances of India (the other seven being Odissi, Mohiniattam, Manipuri, Kathakali, Kathak, Kuchipudi, and Sattriya), and has overtones of Shaivism, Shaktism, and Vaishnavism unlike any of the others.

The painting that you see on this page is a stylised composition of a Bharatnatyam Dancer. Her form is sublime, of which depicted herewith are the mudra of her hands, the ghungroo on her feet, and the beauty of her face. Her hands and feet are dyed the vivid red of the alta, a locally made liquid derived from crushed hibiscus flowers. Gold bangles tinkle at her fair wrists, and pristine silver adornments grace her neck and her ears and the parting of her jet-black hair.

She lowers her head ever so subtly. She is drawn in by the music, her eyes shut, a serene smile playing on the corners of her red-lipped mouth. A gracious red bindi surrounded by dots of sandalwood paste marks the location of the mythical Ajna Chakra. Against the statement gold backdrop of the composition, the dancer’s mudras and musculature seem to have a particularly lifelike quality.

Ganga Aarati Oil Painting On Canvas
Ganga Aarati Oil Painting On Canvas

Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India, home to no less than 2,000 temples of Hindu culture and tradition. The ghats and mandirs in this city provide ample opportunity to spiritually cleanse oneself, so strong is the presence in the city of all that is holy. Its patron deity is Kashi Vishvanath, whose temple is the biggest of all the ones located along the banks of the Ganga that flows through Varanasi. It attracts numerous pilgrims throughout the year, and houses one of the twelve jyotirlingas in the subcontinent. He is a manifestation of the Lord Shiva. The surrounding ghat, the Dashashvamedha Ghat, has its own legends. The name comes from the ten (das) horses sacrificed by Brahma in the Ashvamedha yajna that He performed here, having built the ghat to welcome Shiva to ihaloka (this realm). It is the largest and the liveliest of the ghat of Varanasi - with the fall of dusk, it comes alive with numberless aratis that are conducted by local priests in honour of the sacred river. This painting is aglow with one such ganga aarti, the goblet being majestically swung by a priest at a relatively quiet spot on the Dashashvamedh Ghat.

The priest is in traditional saffron and ivory clothing. The sindoori rug he stands on is strewn with petals from the flowers of offerings he has made to the mother of all rivers. On a raised platform are arranged the stuff of traditional Hindu offering and aarati - a conch, a handheld bell, a bunch of fresh moist marigolds, and some libation contained in a jar. More lamps are placed at the side, from the earthen diyas to the traditional Indian lampstick and the crackling dhunuchi letting out the auspicious smoke. Note how naturalistic is the portrayal of the flames dancing in the winds brought forth from the Ganga. A number of rickety wooden boats are parked near where the dhoti-clad priest stands offering his arati, which one could make out against the inky blue of the Ganga by zooming in. The same is separated from the all-encompassing darkness of the nightsky by a film of black paint that constitutes the Varanasi cityline.

letter of a lover
letter of a lover

Two sharp-featured beauties pore over the letter of a lover. The one clad in pistachio green holds it between her trembling fingers. It is she who has a rightful claim over the things expressed therein, easily deducible from the way she clutches at the dupatta to her cheek. Her friend, dressed in a garnet-coloured lehenga, looks keenly into its contents. From the nature of the smile playing at the corners of her handsome mouth, she is satisfied with the effect it has on her friend.

From their manner of attire and adornment, these ladies are the daughters of royalty or nobility. Their gorgeous figures are clad in lehengas fashioned from the finest silks of the land, woven in with booties of pure gold. Ornaments of gold complete their shringar - jhumkas (traditional Indian danglers) on their delicate earlobes, bangles on those roseate wrists, and gold headbands holding their luscious black braids in place. The makeup on their faces is subtle, just enough to bring out the natural beauty of the facial angulature and complexion.

They are seated on a couch upholstered in crimson velvet. A fair, bejewelled hand rests on a brocaded cushion of dark green colour. Luxuriant wood carvings adorn the walls of the chamber, while an ornate window to the back of the friend affords a view of the outdoors. Into the distance stand trees, of a lower-deciduous nature, amidst rolling verdure and an unusual blue sky.

Dancer Caught In The Ecstasy of Her Art
Dancer Caught In The Ecstasy of Her Art

On the surface of Dancer Caught In The Ecstasy of Her Art, she is an entertainer. She dances to please onlookers, capitalising on her obvious youth and beauty. Perhaps she is in a public establishment, which is her karma-bhoomi (workplace), and the evening throng is at its peak within. Every part of her is up for the gaze of patrons, who come here for the stupor induced by her dance. However, it all becomes a mirage to her the moment she shuts her eyes and sets into motion.

Inside her mind and her art, she is not where she appears to be. The music steals through the provocative whistles of the crowd and penetrates her, transporting her to a world of her own. It is deep, dark inner space with flashes of brilliant colour and whiteness. The same has been captured perfectly by the painter who saw her dance one evening, as could be gleaned from the unusual background of this composition. In it, there is only the artiste and her art which is divine to her if not to anyone else.

She is clad in a skimpy silken costume the colour of fire. Together with the sleeves of grey tulle on her forearms, they reveal rather than conceal her gorgeous frame. Yet, it is not for her to care. In the midst of her sequence, she is caught in ecstasy, and there is nothing to inhibit her as she moves.
