Kubera -The Tibetan Buddhist God of Wealth - Thangka Painting Without Brocade
Kubera - God of Wealth - Thangka Painting

Kubera, the God of wealth according to Buddhism is also known as Vaishravana. He is considered as a guardian king of the north direction and of Mount Sumeru that is believed to be the center of the universe.

In this Lord Kubera Thangka Painting, the God of wealth is seated in a royal posture. He has a golden yellow complexion and plump torso decked with gold ornaments. He wears a five-pronged crown that symbolizes five transcendental Buddhas. His huge set of eyes, upturned lips, and peculiar mustache with beard are the remarkable characteristics of the deity. The long and flowing scarf is wrapped around his body and below the waist; his body is covered with superfine garments. He tends to hold different attributes in his right hands such as sword, banner, lemon or flat vessel, etc but the most famous insignia for which he is generally recognized is Mongoose (Nakula) which he holds in his left hand. Mongoose represents blessings from the lord of wealth as it keeps spitting jewels from his mouth. Lord Kubera sits in the lalitasana pose wherein his leg is drawn up and the other is relaxing on the pistil of the lotus. He is seated on the lotus throne. The offerings placed before him are precious jewels.

His thangka is placed on the outer walls of temples or monasteries as it tends to negate the harmful influences which can violate the sanctity of sanctorium.

Samantabhadra Mantra Brocadeless Thangka Painting
Samantabhadra Mantra Brocadeless Thangka Painting

A Tibetan thangka of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, one of the Shakyamuni triad of Mahayana Buddhism (together with Gautama Buddha and Manjushri). In this fine example of thangka art, He is depicted in a dynamic stance upon the back of a fair elephant, a mythical creature of the Buddhist heavens.

A dhoti of powdery blue silk and sashes of pale gold float about the figure of Samantabhadra. His face is framed by fine black locks, the composure of which conveys serenity and profound introspection. The same is set off by a gold crown, each of whose five spires is studded with a brightly colored jewel.

This Samantabhadra mantra thangka painting would be a signature addition to the home of any Buddhist devotee. A monotone backrest in deep, velvety blue, dotted with the ashtamangala. A background wherein the gradient transitions from an unusual silvery green to a dark, tempestuous blue.

Nevari Style Shakyamuni-Thangka Painting
Nevari Style Shakyamuni-Thangka Painting

Nevari is the term for the architecture and aesthetics of the Neva people of Nepal. Inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley, the Neva people are known for their love of well-defined lines and solid, statement colors. The thangka that you see on this page is atypical of the Nevari aesthetic. It depicts the seated Shakyamuni in the bhoomisparsha stance.

Gautama Buddha is clad in a peach-colored low-wound dhoti whose hems are bare till the mid-foreleg. It reveals the smooth gold of the complexion of His body. The same is defined by sharp, stately curves. The crown and adornments of Siddhartha Gautama are characterised by intricate jewel-work, which is a staple of the Nevari aesthetic.

The back of the Buddha’s throne is predominated by rich tones of crimson. A network of the dense vine in pale gold color along the upper edge, and a colorful facial motif resembling Kirtimukha. The solid-colored background in deep Prussian blue and the multicolored lotus petals along the front of the throne are hallmarks of the authentic Nevari thangka.

Shadbhuja Ganesha Seated on a Rat with Snakes as Dragons - Thangka Painting
Shadbhuja Ganesha-Thangka Painting

Lord Ganesha is one of Hinduism’s most prominent deities. He is the god of new beginnings and the lord who removes obstacles. Because of these, he is often invoked at the beginning of prayers or rituals, or when believers are set to undergo a major milestone and before making life decisions. He is traditionally depicted with an elephant head, often large in proportion which signifies knowledge (Lord Ganesha is a god of arts and wisdom). He has big eyes to see beyond what the naked eyes see and big ears to listen to the universe well.

Along with his elephant head, Lord Ganesha is also usually depicted with a big, rounded belly. In this painting, he is pictured standing, in a heroic or battle stance against the enemy, the snake-dragons. His features are also true to tradition; one tusk is broken and has four hands each with a symbolic meaning. One hand holds a noose as a symbol for attachment (in a blessing mudra) while another holds an axe, use to cut down material attachment as well as Krodha or anger. He also holds his broken tusk on the third hand and a bowl of food on the fourth hand to symbolize the rewards of being wise. In most depictions, he is seen drawn with a small mouse, this time; he rides the rat in a bigger proportion. The rat used to mean that Ganesha can overcome obstacles of all sizes. On the rat, he is seated with one foot ready to touch the ground, while the other is resting on the knee which signifies him being of the earth while also not being of it. The snake in his iconography is often seen around his waist or torso as a belt or a necklace. In this thangka, the snakes are depicted as dragons that Ganesha defeat.

Chemchok Heruka with Consort Tibetan Buddhist - Thangka Painting

Chemchok Heruka Buddhist - Thangka Painting

In Tibetan Buddhism, Chemchok Heruka is most notably known to be the focal divinity in the Fifty-eight Wrathful Deities mandala where he is the furious aspect of Samantabhadra. These 58 deities are said to be wrathful deities one can meet in death and rebirth. He is also known as the Mahottara Heruka. Meanwhile, in the Guhyagarbha Tantra, he is the main deity among the herukas of the Eight Commandments of Accomplishments (Nyingmapa lineage) in Tibet. Take a closer look at the thangka and notice that he is depicted with nine heads, all wrathful. Eighteen arms and eight legs can also be seen in the painting.

Chemchok Heruka - Thangka Painting

Following terton the tradition (or a person who was a follower of Padmasambhava, the founder of 8th-century Nyingmapa), deities such as Chemchok Heruka may take on varying forms depending on the needs of the times. The wings remain consistent in most depictions, as seen in this one behind the arms. On his waist is the skin of the tiger. Another notable element in this thangka is his consort Namshyalma in a union position. This yab-yum (lit. father-mother) is a symbol of the union of a deity and his consort, the union of strength and wisdom of the male and female. She holds a skull cap and the hands-on on her right side represent the manifestations of eight bodhisattvas (gaurima), while the ones on her left are the manifestations of eight female bodhisattvas (singhama). In addition, the skull caps also appear to have blood, as Heruka in Tibetan translates to darg tung (blood drinker). Zoom in near the lower part of the thangka and there are groups of colored spheres each packed with offerings for the deities. The larger bowls appear to be skulls that represent elements of the senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and thinking). This symbolizes an offering of senses to the wrathful deities as symbols of their beings in exchange for blessings.

Spirit Of Enlightenment Mandala-Thangka Painting
Spirit Of Enlightenment Mandala-Thangka Painting

The sacred hum symbol is at the heart of this mandala. Thick, white strokes of the brush against a scarlet-colored circlet. Painted in the Tibetan script, it is the final syllable of the Shadakshari Avalokiteshvara mantra, which is extracted from the Mahayana Karandavyuhasootra and is considered the moola (fundamental) mantra of Buddhism. Against the cobalt blue of the surrounding circle, its sacred syllables are inscribed in delicate gold letters. It reads “om mani padme hum”.

Around the blue-and-scarlet pistil are flame-colored petals totaling eight in number. Eight is a significant number - on the surface of each petal is painted one of the all-important ashtamangala symbols. Ashtamangala is a portmanteau of the Sanskrit words ‘ashta’ (eight) and ‘mangala’ (auspiciousness) and comprises, among other things, the infinity knot and the conch, and the lotus. Solid blue and pink petals complete the image of the lotus.

A deep blue gradient fills up the circular space between the petals and the concentric gold diskettes. The same is superimposed with sacred Tibetan letters and miniature motifs in dense gold color. The inner edge of the mandala is packed with lotus petal motifs infused with green and crimson, while the outer edge features a complex, filigree-like handiwork. Framed by natural bouquets of gold and pink, such a mandala thangka would be a colorful addition to the personal space of any devotee.

Tibetan Buddhist Thangka Painting
Tibetan Buddhist Thangka Painting

Mahakala comes from the Sanskrit maha (great) and Kala (death or time) which translates that he is a deity beyond time. In Tibet, he is also called the Nagpo Chenpo, or the Great Black One, and is revered as guardian and protector. He is affiliated with the Hindu god Shiva. According to tradition, he dwells in the cremation grounds. In this thangka, he is depicted with two arms and two legs. On his sides is a vulture and a lion, colored black to symbolize darkness or death. Mahakala is surrounded by bright flames, representing the fire of dissolution.

As in this piece Thangka Painting Two Armed Mahakala, he is depicted with a wrathful and fierce expression that signals his might and power to overcome negativity along the path of enlightenment. His skin is blue that represents the eternal Dharmakaya. He sports an aflame beard and eyebrows to signal his transformative power to turn the five negativities into five pearls of wisdom. These negative afflictions are represented by the five skulls on his crown (attachment, aversion, ignorance, pride, and jealousy). Mahakala wears a necklace adorned with human heads. His three eyes represent the power to see in the past, present, and future and it can also stand for the three bodies of the Buddha. In his left hand is a skull cup representing the power to crush worldly attachment while the other hand is a blade with a Vajra handle which he could cut off ignorance. He stands on a lotus throne (on a corpse) with a sun disk (signify his illumination and enlightenment). On his waist is a tiger skin that represents purification while the snakeskin is his sign of purification from hate. He can also be seen trampling a being, not because of terrorizing them but as a sign that his power could go at lengths that can subdue the world if it means destroying obstacles to enlightenment. At the bottom are a black figure and a set of offerings to symbolize patrons of the deity.

The Kalachakra Tantra (‘kala’ is Sanskrit for time; ‘chakra’, for cycle) expounded by Lord Buddha is a profound conception of the world as we know it. It comprises the outer, inner, and alternative Kalachakra’s. While the outer Kalachakra is the extrinsic locus of birth and death, the inner Kalachakra is the microcosm of sentience. The alternative Kalachakra pertains to the journey of Enlightenment/Buddhahood subject to the passage of kala.

Tibetan Thangka Painting - The Splendour Of The Kalachakra Mandala
Tibetan Thangka Painting - The Splendour Of The Kalachakra Mandala

The thangka that you see on this page is of the Kalachakra mandala. The majestic palace that you see on this page is a symbolic entity, a visualization aid. It has four gates, each oriented to the four quarters of the world, and is protected by blue, scarlet, and gold discoid, each standing for a spiritual ideal that one must attain in order to access the riches offered by the Kalachakra palace. Zoom in on the splendor of the sprawling gates of the palace - note the perfect symmetry and attention to detail with which the same have been painted.

The importance of mandalas in Vajrayana Buddhism is in the fact that they are visualization aids. Each of the five stories of the Kalachakra mandala palace leads the practitioner through the realms of body, expression, intellect, consciousness, and bliss to the resident Kalachakra deity. Practice empowers one to visualize and penetrate each and every corner of this all-important structure.

Tibetian Thangka Paintings - Lord Bhaishajyaguru Mandala
Tibetian Thangka Paintings - Lord Bhaishajyaguru Mandala

The mandala is of especial significance in eastern religion and spiritual culture. Geometrically speaking, it is a closed curve that represents the micro- and macro-cosm and serves as a visualisation aid. In Vajrayana Buddhism, each deity comes with their own unique mandala. In traditional works of art such as the thangka that you see on this page, it is seen to emerge from the deity poised at the centre of the composition.

The mandala of the Lord Bhaishajyaguru has been mapped out in detail in this thangka. The robe of red silk and the blue medicine-pot contrast sharply with the olive colour of His complexion and the ice-pink of His lotus pedestal. He is contained within a circle of seated dhyani (contemplative) bodhisattvas and the main mandala made up of rectilinear curves. From the latter project the structure of ancient Himalayan temples and the wrathful mouths of mythical creatures. A circle of pastel lotus petals and thick gold vines encapsulates the same.

Below the Lord Bhaishajyaguru Mandala is a verdant snatch of the lower Himalayan landscape. Above it is a sky composed of varying shades and tints of blue and delicate wisps of coloured clouds. Together with the Vajrayana deities around the mandala and the mythical creatures on the frame of the painting, these are the common elements of Nepal’s thangka tradition.

Tibetan Buddhist Six Armed White Mahakala

Thangka or Tanka is a sacred Buddha art form made on a cotton fabric and usually demonstrates a Buddhist deity, scene or Mandala; based on themes of history, culture, policy or social life; each detail here is filled with a retold myth with laid guidelines of their symbols and allusions. The Buddhist Mahakala painted here is the protector deity of the Shangpa Kagyu tradition and its practitioners.

The Tibetan Buddhist Six Armed White Mahakalas is a wrathful aspect of Avalokiteshwara and is worshipped for eliminating spiritual and material poverty; stands here in his ferocious stance, lotus petals which are placed on a stylized multicolored pedestal; attired and jeweled graciously with the outrageous expressions signifying him as the King of Power and the Lord of pristine awareness.

He has six arms and three eyes with the brilliant fires of dissolution and dwells in the midst of eight cremation grounds; he holds a trident, damru, scythe etc in his various hands as his incensed weapons of protection; framed in an aureole of deadly ashes from the cremation ground and surrounded by White Elephants near his legs and skulls at the bottom. The painter has created a very realistic view of the deity, such that his single glance is enough to picturize his actual self.

A soothing image of the Hindu Religious God Lord Hanuman, within the orb of the pristine moon. In His characteristic warrior stance, He stands on a piece of verdure with His feet apart, a gigantic mace in one of His hands and the other raised in blessing. Devotee of Lord Rama, saviour of His brother Lakshmana, Lord Hanuman is the ashtasiddhi- and navanidhi-bestower. He has the flawless complexion and the supple musculature of the accomplished yogi, adorned as He is with a silk loincloth and ample gold jewellery.

Thangka Paintings - Lord Hanuman

The elements that surround His central figure typically belong to the traditional thangka tradition. A solid-coloured halo, through which swishes the great tail of the Lord. An oval-shaped aureole, serrated from the centre outwards. Note the curvaceous motifs that are painted along its edge. An imposing vine with vibrant leaves and flowers grows to one side of the aureole, while dense undergrowth, the kind that are to be found in the mid-reaches of the Himalayas, defines the rest of the frame. Each of these aspects are decidedly thangka in style, and add to the divine presence of Lord Hanuman in this composition.

The dusk of the background is permeated by the rays of the luminous moon, a fine red lining setting off its glow. Note the numerous stars studded in the heavens that shine in homage to the glamour of Lord Hanuman.

Padmapani Avalokiteshvara is the most widely loved Bodhisattva. In Sanskrit, ‘avalokita’ roughly means ‘to look on’, which makes this deity the guardian supervisor of the human realm. Some interpret His name to mean ‘ishvara (lord) of all that is drishyam (seen/perceived)’. The figure you see on this thangka is the female form of Avalokiteshvara. Her name is Guanyin, which in Chinese means ‘one who hears’. Note how her head is tilted slightly downwards at an angle, as if she is listening to the longing of Her devotees as She looks upon.
Like most Buddhist devis, She has the tall, slender form of the Himalayan ascetic. Her silken skirts drop to Her feet, barely revealing a long leg; while Her torso is strategically concealed by tigerskin and a hand raised in blessing. Coiled amidst Her eight arms is a sea of sashes floating about Her like the gorgeous black hair across Her shoulders. The quintessentially Buddhist five-spired crown and gold kundalas frame her lovely, youthful face. It bears an expression of maternal comfort and bliss.
Indeed she is the Devi of compassion and mercy. In one of her anterior hands she holds the mythical healing potion of Tibetan medical folklore. Generously she dispenses of it upon this loka. Surrounded by flowers (from Her pedestal to Her aureole) and offerings (in the foreground), the pristine stupa in the background completes the composition.
